Well, Carlisle, you’ve stalled long enough. You knew this day would come. Go face the music.

He got up from the bed, took a shower, and got dressed. When he went downstairs, Samantha was fully dressed and sitting on the sofa, lost in thought.

She looked about ready to burst into tears. He watched her close her eyes and lean back on the couch. Her eyes snapped open when he leaned over and brushed his lips across hers. She didn’t pull away, but she didn’t respond either.

Alex sat down next to her. Their eyes met and held. She was the first to break eye contact. Looking down at her folded hands, she took a deep breath.

“Alex I don’t know how to tell you this.” Samantha stared at him for several seconds. Now that she had his attention, this was harder than she thought it would be. “Alex, this is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to say.” Tears pooled in her eyes. “I don’t even know where to begin.” She closed her eyes and took another deep breath.

“Come on,” he said softly, taking her hand, “it can’t be that bad.” He already knew what she was going to tell him, but he wanted to make it as painless as possible for her. He knew if she found out he’d been keeping this from her for months, it would be over between them.

“It is for me. It’s actually good news for you.” Samantha took another deep breath. “Matthew is your son,” she whispered past the lump in her throat.

Alex stared at her, not saying a word. His heart ached at the pain in her eyes. Her tears brought tears to his eyes. He knew this was killing her and it was killing him also.

“I don’t understand, Samantha,” he choked out. “What are you saying?” Alex closed his eyes and prayed he could pull this off. Lying to her and pretending was harder than he had ever imagined.

“Your son lived. My son died. I think this will explain things to you better than I can.” She handed him the unsigned confession Jason had given her. Samantha watched him drop down to the sofa as he began to read.

She watched the tears fall from his eyes as he read. Sitting down next to him, she put her arms around him. He returned her embrace and let the letter slip from his fingers.

The nightmare was over. Alex was overcome with emotions. He had wanted to share his feelings with her about his son, and now he could.

“Tell me this is for real,” he whispered in her hair. “Tell me someone is not playing some horrible joke on us. He is really my son.” Samantha raised his face to hers. Their eyes met and held. She wiped at his tears with her hand.

“It’s real, Alex. I thought the same thing at first, but it’s for real. I had a blood test done. Matt is not my son. The genetics are similar because Kirstin was my sister, but I’m not his mother.
